For me, one of those moments came in the middle of the night, long before I ever became an attorney—back when I was a paralegal, still learning what it meant to advocate for people whose lives had been turned upside down. My grandmother, Helen Reeder, was 97 years old. She lived independently, still sharp, still engaged, still very much the matriarch of a large and loving family. She had outlived her husband of more than fifty years, and her older sisters were still alive well into their hundreds. She was slowing down, yes, but she was present, joyful, and deeply connected to all of us. One night, everything changed. My aunt—her youngest daughter—had stopped by to check on my grandmother and fell asleep on the couch. In the early hours of the morning, she woke to the sound of a car crashing through the wall of the home. The driver had already struck and killed a bicyclist moments earlier. He then plowed into my grandmother’s bedroom, killing her instantly, before jumping out of his luxury car with a gun in his hand. At 2:30 a.m., I received the phone call no one ever wants to get. I listened to my mom tell me what had happened and that she and my dad were on their way to the scene. They stood there for eleven hours while debris was lifted off what remained of my grandmother’s body. There are no words for that kind of loss. It was horrific, senseless, and impossible to understand. Of all the ways my grandmother could have passed, being crushed in her sleep by a reckless driver was never something I could have imagined. In the days that followed, I found myself asking questions that had no answers: Why God? Why do people get to act like this? What about the family of the bicyclist? How can one person cause so much devastation in a single night? And then, months later, the legal and financial aftermath began. Insurance companies became involved—homeowners' insurance, the driver’s insurance, criminal proceedings, estate issues, and a maze of decisions that grieving children were in no position to navigate. The situation was complicated, emotional, and overwhelming. That’s when my boss at the time, Jerry Pearson, stepped in. He handled everything: communication with insurance companies, the appointment of the personal representative of the estate, the investigation, and all the legal complexities that overwhelmed my family. He brought clarity to chaos. He carried the weight so my family didn’t have to. And that experience changed me. It showed me, in the most personal way possible, what a difference a compassionate, experienced personal injury attorney can make. Not because money brings people back. Not because it erases trauma. But because when the unthinkable happens, families deserve someone who can shoulder the burden they should never have to carry. Today, when I help clients through their own preventable tragedies—losses that should never have happened—I think of my grandmother. I think of the families who call me with shaking voices, asking the same questions I once asked. I think of the privilege it is to stand beside people on some of the darkest days of their lives. I keep a piece of art my grandmother painted in my office. It reminds me why this work matters. It reminds me that behind every case file is a human being whose life has been forever changed. Money doesn’t bring people back. It doesn’t turn back time. But in our civil justice system, financial accountability is the tool we have to deter wrongful conduct—especially when corporations or individuals place profit, convenience, or ego above human life. Holding them accountable is one of the most powerful ways to prevent future harm. That is why I do this work. That is why personal injury attorneys matter. And that is why, when you are hurting, you deserve someone who will stand with you, fight for you, and help carry the weight you should never have had to bear.
